Activity Overview
Split the class up into teams. Students should construct 2 model "homes", a square box out of the manila folders.
One of the homes should be painted/colored black and should have some cardboard attached to the side so that
students can compare between a house that is properly insulated and one that is not properly insulated.

A thermometer should be placed in the side of the house. Each model house should be placed in front of a lamp, one
at a time. The teams should record the temperature of the thermometer before heating and record this as the
temperature at 0 time.

Each team should then turn on the heat lamp and after each 30 sec interval, record the temperature of the house.
They should continue the procedure for 10min. At the end of 10min, each team should turn off their lamps and record the temperature EVERY MINUTE after the lamp is turned off for 10 min. They should then graph the data and compare their results between a well insulated house and a not-so-well insulated house. Students should comment on how heat is transferred and why the two homes do not heat up at the same intervals.
